Sucralfate is the generic version of Carafate, a brand-name medicine. It's a prescription medication that's used to treat upper gastrointestinal ulcers, peptic ulcer disease, and ulcer recurrence. Sucralfate is a local mucosal adherent that is made up of the hydroxy aluminium salt of sucrose octasulfate. It develops a covering over ulcers by adhering to the damaged area, protecting it from acid and enzymes and speeding up the healing process.
Sucralfate is also used to treat ulcers and upper gastrointestinal disorders in dogs, horses, and cats that are caused by drugs (especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids), toxic chemical ingestion, liver disease, renal failure, carcinoma, stress (trauma, shock, sepsis, and burns), and inflammatory bowel disease.
Sucralfate Market Drivers
The sucralfate
market is predicted to rise due to increased research and development
initiatives aimed at identifying novel medicines employing sucralfate.
According to a paper published in April 2018 by the American Broncho
Esophagological Association, sucralfate combined with honey can help cure
esophageal damage in infants and children. Button Batteries (BB), little
disc-shaped batteries typically seen in toys, have been linked to esophageal
harm in newborns and toddlers. Sucralfate combined with honey can assist to
reduce button batteries and provide symptomatic relief from esophageal damage.
Sucralfate Market Restraint
Sucralfate
market expansion is expected to be hampered by drug shortages. For example,
according to a September 2018 Drug Shortages Canada report, APO-SUCRALFATE -
TAB 1G (APOTEX INC) containing sucralfate was unavailable owing to a
manufacturing disruption. The medication is prescribed for the treatment of
peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Sucralfate Market – Regional Analysis
The global
sucralfate market is divided into five regions: North America, Latin America,
Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.
Because of
the growing number of clinical trials, North America is likely to dominate the
sucralfate market. Sucralfate is being studied in a clinical phase II research
at the University of Texas to improve oral intake in children with infected
oral ulcers. The research should be finished by June 2019.
