Increasing incidence of constipation is expected to drive laxatives market growth
Constipation
is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems worldwide. The rates of
occurrence, however, differ by region. According to a survey issued by the
Canadian Digestive Health Foundation in 2014, one out of every four adults in
Canada experienced constipation symptoms in 2014. In Canada, women had nearly
double the rate of chronic constipation as males.
Constipation
is becoming more common in other developed economies, such as the United States
and the United Kingdom. According to a survey issued by Coloplast, a global
leader in ostomy care, urology and continence care, and wound and skin care,
one in every seven persons in the United Kingdom suffered with constipation in
2014-2015. The situation was significantly worse for youngsters, with one out
of every three experiencing constipation in 2014-2015.
Increasing incidence of eating
disorders and increasing availability of over-the-counter laxatives are expected
to drive market growth
Eating
disorders have been on the rise in developed economies such as the United
States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany. In 2015, a survey
commissioned by Beat projected that around 725,000 people in the UK were
impacted by the condition. According to the South Carolina Department of Mental
Health (DMH), about 8 million people in the United States, including seven
million women and one million males, were diagnosed with an eating disorder in
2015.
Overuse of
laxatives is particularly common in patients with eating disorders. Laxatives,
which are available over-the-counter (OTC), have also contributed to excessive
abuse. Overuse of laxatives has contributed greatly to the expansion of the laxatives
market.
